Tìr Ìseal Film
Original film and animation inspired by the Tìr Ìseal nan Òran project stories.
Tiree film-maker Jack Lockhart created a series of films for the Tìr Ìseal nan Òran project based on James Turnbull’s map and the stories from the production.
Enjoy his beautiful and languid animations of Turnbull’s original map, taking us from place to place and from story to story. In our production Jack’s animations were accompanied by ambient sounds recorded in the different locations around the island.
Jack worked with children from Tiree Primary School to create animated puppets based on characters from the project stories. He also created a film reflecting on the lost villages buried beneath the sands at Ben Hough, Tiree. It is accompanied by Ian Smith’s musical meditation on those same lost villages.
Travels around James Turnbull’s map…
Fly over James Turnbull’s map and arrive at Grianal Bay where, according to court records from 1812, the body of a mermaid was found on the sand.
Travel into the Kenavara cave in this slow, compelling animation inspired by the story of the Piper of Kenavara.
Fly from the site of the lost villages at Hough to the craggy corner of Tiree at Kenavara, where the Piper’s Cave, old Danish forts and the stone called the Bed of the Daughter of the King of Norway are found.
From the caves at Kenavara, travel over James Turnbull’s map to the wide bay and white sands of Vaul Bay.
From Vaul Bay we travel across Tiree to Balemartine.
We journey across Turnbull’s map of Tiree from Balemartine to Caolas, and depart the beach in a dinghy for the big ship anchored in the bay.
