Tìr Ìseal Tapestry
We invited descendants of those who have left Tiree to create textile pieces inspired by the project stories. These pieces, with the reflections of their creators, have been sewn together into the ‘Tìr Ìseal Tapestry’ which is now being exhibited on Tiree.
Tir Iseal Tapestry booklet
We’ve created a booklet explaining the background to the Tapestry project and listing every square of the Tapestry. Learn about our international team of fabric artists and their connections back to Tiree through family, friends, events and culture.

How did participants contribute to the tapestry?
We invited descendants of people who left Tiree to sew a square of fabric that reflects the project stories and their family legacy connected to Tiree.
Watch the introductory online seminar about the Tapestry project here.
How did they do it?
Our international team of fabric artists cut out squares of medium sized cotton fabric 24cm x 24cm and came up with a design that fit into a 20cm x 20cm square.
Then the fun part. Stitch it, embroider it, cut it, paint it, knit it, dye it, bleach it, stain it , pencil it, stick it, crayon it, or whatever they were inspired to do with fabric.
A smaller piece of fabric 12cm x 10cm contained a 8cm x 6cm design that represents where people live in the world. These smaller rectangles make up the border of the tapestry.
Assembly
The sewn squares made their way by post to Tiree from across the world in May and June 2022. Here Catriona Smyth sewed them all together into the Tir Iseal Tapestry.
